Landing corporate volunteer partnerships

A corporate volunteer partnership is an arrangement where a company sends employees to volunteer with your organization, usually as a group for a single day. Corporate volunteering is broadening and shortening at once, so offers designed around one-day group projects land far better than requests for ongoing commitment.

Most nonprofits approach corporate volunteering by asking for what they need: reliable people, for ongoing roles, over months. Most companies want something different, and the mismatch is why so many of these conversations go nowhere.

What are companies actually looking for in volunteering?

Corporate volunteering is getting broader and shallower simultaneously. Benevity State of Corporate Volunteering 2026 found average program participation rose 30%, from 10.4% to 13.6% of employees, while average hours per volunteer fell from 16.4 to 12.7 per year across the six-year period.

More people, each giving less time. The report describes a clear transition toward episodic engagement.

If that is the direction, an offer built around continuity is fighting the current. An offer built around a well-organized single day is swimming with it.

Why do companies fund employee volunteering?

Corporate volunteering budgets are usually defended internally on employee outcomes rather than community outcomes. That is not cynicism, it is just where the money comes from.

The number that does that work: the Benevity Talent Retention Study from 2022, a longitudinal study of 10.6 million users across more than 400 enterprise companies, found 52% lower turnover among employees who participate in corporate purpose programs.

You do not need to quote that at them. You need to design an offer that produces it: a day where employees work together on something visible, finish it, and can see what they did.

How do I find companies with no volunteer program?

The same source notes that in the United States, only 49% of companies offer community volunteer programs as a benefit, according to the 2024 SHRM Employee Benefits survey.

That reframes the outreach problem. You are not competing for a slot at companies with established programs. Roughly half of employers have nothing in place, and for those the conversation is easier because you are not displacing anyone.

Start with the companies that already employ your current volunteers and donors. Someone inside is worth more than a cold approach to a general inbox.

What should a corporate volunteer day involve?

The project needs four properties.

Completable. The group finishes something and can see it finished. Half a job is demoralizing and does not photograph.

Absorbable. You can supervise the number you agreed to. State your real maximum.

Trainable in ten minutes. You cannot onboard forty people to a complicated task.

Photogenic without being staged. Companies report internally with pictures. Making that easy costs you nothing.

How do I calculate the value of a corporate volunteer day?

Companies report volunteering in hours and often in dollars. Do the arithmetic for them.

Independent Sector and the University of Maryland Do Good Institute put the 2025 value of a volunteer hour at $36.14. Thirty people for six hours is 180 hours, roughly $6,500 in contributed labour. That is a line their team can put in a report, and it makes your one-pager more useful than the polite thank-you letter most nonprofits send.

There is a full corporate partnership one-pager template you can adapt.

Do corporate volunteers become regular volunteers?

A corporate day is capacity, not continuity. Treat it as a way to clear a backlog, prepare a site, or run an event you could not otherwise staff.

Occasionally an individual from the group comes back on their own. That is a bonus, not the plan, and building your program on the assumption that it happens will disappoint you.

Common questions

How do I find companies that want to volunteer?

Start with companies that already employ your volunteers or donors, then local employers with a community relations contact. Around half of US companies have no volunteering benefit at all, so many have no incumbent partner.

What size group should I accept?

Only what you can genuinely supervise. A group of forty you cannot manage damages the relationship more than politely capping it at fifteen would have.

Should I charge companies for volunteer days?

Some nonprofits do, particularly where the project has real material costs. Be transparent up front. Many corporate programs have budget attached and will expect to cover expenses.

How far ahead do corporate groups plan?

Usually one to three months. Ask for confirmed headcount two weeks before the date, because attrition between sign-up and arrival is normal and you need to plan the work around the real number.
